Seiko SKX031 Review Automatic Diving Watch

Seiko SKX031 Review

My rating: 8/10. A popular men’s Seiko diving watch powered by an automatic movement.

Hello everyone, today I’m taking a look at the Seiko SKX031. This is a highly desirable Seiko diving watch that’s powered by an impressive 7S26 workhorse automatic movement (more on that later). This model features a rubber strap but there are variations available with a stainless steel strap if that’s what you prefer.I hope you enjoy the Seiko SKX031 review below.

Below is an up-close image of the Seiko SKX031 featuring a sturdy rubber strap.

Seiko SKX031 Technical specifications

I wanted to get things started with a quick skim through some of the technical specifications for the Seiko SKX031. This simply gives you a chance to have a quick look through to instantly see if this is the type of watch you’re going to like or not. For example, some people wouldn’t want to go for a very large, or smaller watch.

Seiko SKX031 Dial and Casing Design

The Seiko SKX031 is a typical diving watch. It features a large dial with a rotating bezel and a high contrasting display. The bold hands and hour markers stand out brilliantly against the black background. They also have a coating of lume for better visibility in dim lit conditions.

The dial features a day and date display at the 3 o’clock position, this is a popular feature to have as you’ll see in many day date watches. On the dial, you’ll also spot the terms ‘automatic’ and the water resistance rating.

The casing of the Seiko SKX031 is made of stainless steel with a diameter of 39mm and a thickness of 12mm, this makes it a popular size for men’s watches. The crown on this model is located at the 3 o’clock position and down screw down to help prevent it accidentally being pulled out whilst under water.

Strap & Clasp

The strap of the Seiko SKX031 is made of a comfortable thick rubber and fastens with a buckle style clasp. The width of this rubber strap is approximately 22mm. The strap can be replaced if you wish to do so. The size of the gap between the lugs is 22mm. Purchase a watch repair kit for all the tools required for this job.

The Seiko SKX031 Movement

At the heart of this Seiko SKX031 is the very well known 7S26 workhorse movement. This is a movement that many Seiko fans love to have in their watches. The 7S26 movement has a 21 jewel design and beats at 21,600 BPH giving you a really smooth 6 ticks per second, vs a standard quartz 1 tick per second.

The movement has a power reserve of 43 hours once fully wound. It doesn’t feature manual winding or hacking.

Seiko SKX031 Crystal

Protecting the front of the watch is a Seiko Hardlex crystal glass. This is a proprietary glass owned by Seiko and used in many of their watches. You’ll commonly find this is many Seiko, Pulsar, and Lorus watches.Hardlex glass is a specially hardened mineral crystal glass that gives you a high level of resistance to scratches and knocks.

A Final Word On The Seiko SKX031

The Seiko SKX031 is one of my favourite Seiko diving watches. If you like the design of these type of timepieces I recommend checking out my list of the best diving watches for all budgets. You should also consider the Seiko SKX007 and the Seiko SKX009.

If you’re after an automatic diving watch with a reliable and accurate movement then the Seiko SKX031 should make you happy. The 100m water resistance rating is normally enough for most people, but if you’re after something a little more serious, I’d consider the article on the best diving watches that I mentioned above.

Overall the Seiko SKX031 is a well built watch that offers great value for money and I’d be happy to recommend it to anyone looking for a Seiko diver.
