Let’s get started shall we

Making a beard oil, things you’ll need

Before you get started making your brand new bread oils you’ll want to make sure you have everything from our handy checklist:

Carrier Oils

A carrier oil is the base oil you use when putting together your beard oil. The ideal carrier oils will very closely mimic the sebum oil that is naturally produced by your skin.

The best carrier oils in our opinion are Jojoba, Argan and Grape Seed as a base. These all a similar in molecular structure to nautural sebum oil and blend in nicely with your beard and skin, perfect for nourishing your facial hair.

You’ll commonly find many of the following base beard oil blends:

  • Argan
  • Jojoba
  • Grape Seed
  • Coconut
  • Sweet Almond
  • Castor
  • Hemp
  • Apricot Kernel

Essential Oils

The next key ingedient you’ll be need is essential oils. These are what add the scent to your beard oil. There are so many to choose from that it would be impossible to list them all, you’ll enjoy seeing what you can come up with on your own after a bit of expierence putting together some of our beard oil recipes that we’ve provided.

Keep in mind that as essential oils are very potent you only need to use a few drops. Make sure you pay close attention to how much you’re putting in, too much can quickly ruin an entire batch of beard oil, and this stuff isn’t cheap, so be extremely careful.

You can actually pick up some great essential oil sets on Amazon, there’s a few below for you to look at, if you need some extra help I recommend checking out the reviews and some of the best sellers to get you started.

Storage Containers

Obviously once you’ve finished putting your beloved beard oil recipe together you’ll requiring somewhere to safely keep it.

One of the most common options to go for is a small 1oz amber glass bottle, stick to the amber bottoles as they help to prevent UV rays from effecting the quality of the beard oil. Try to pick up a few of these if you can so that you can test out a variety of recipes.

 Tongs

Pick yourself up some tongs if you don’t have any available. These are used for sterilizing your storage bottles before you fill them up with your beard oils. Using the tongs you can pull your beard oil containers out of boiling water.

Eye Dropper

These are the perfect tool for extracting the oils you need and correctly measuring out the right doses for your beard oil recipes. Considering they’re so cheap I recommend grabbing a couple so you have one spare for when you inevitably misplace one.

 Funnel selection

The last thing you want to do after putting your new homemade beard oil together is spill any. Funnels are a sensible idea as they make transferring the finished oil recipe into your bottles much easier. They’re also relatively inexpensive.

Glass graduated cylinders

Yeah now you’re really going to feel like you’re back in science class. This may seem a bit extreme but they really are very handy when it comes to mixing homemade beard oil recipes.

Labels

Again while not exactly a necessity labels add a nice finishing touch to your beard oil recipes and you’ll also be able to tell which is which at a glance. Even if just for the small amount of time this saves in a day it’s worth it in my opinion.

How to make beard oil

So how do you make your own beard oil? Follow the tips below for everything you need to know:

1. Sterilize your storage bottles

You should always sterilize your storage bottles before using them. To do this add them to some water then bring it to the boil, afterwards you can remove the bottles using the tongs and dry them using paper towels.

Do not add your bottles straight to boiling water or taking them from boiling water and run cold water on them – either of these can result in the glass breaking

 2. Put together your base carrier oil blend

Next up you’ll be needing to put together the base carrier oil for your recipe. Check the beard oil recipe that you’re making to see how much of each ingredient you require.

You can use the funnels mentioned earlier on to fill up the glass graduated cylinder for more accurate measuring.

3. Fill up your storage bottles

You can now add your base carrier oil blend to your bottles. Simply remove the top of the sterilized amber bottles and make use of another funnel to fill your bottle without spilling.

4. Add your chosen essential oils

This is the most enjoyable bit for me. You now get to add your chosen essential oils into the bottles. As you’ve likely filled up multiple bottles you could actually chose to try out a variety of recipes.

Be very careful during this part, as I mentioned earlier on, too much of an essential oil can completely ruin your homemade beard oil. Take it slowly, it’s much better to add to little, then increase it later if need be than it is if you add too much.

5. Shake it baby

Pick up the bottle (making sure to fasten the lid back on first of course) and shake the bottle up to help mix all the oils together.

6. Time to enjoy

Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labour, try out your new beard oil and see how it feels. If you like it why not make a larger batch? You could even tell your friends about it, perhaps they’ll want a try to. This is also a pretty awesome gift to give to someone who’s into the beard oils.

7. Do it all over again

Making beard oils from home can be quite addictive and fun. Once you’ve made one and gotten use to the process you’ll want to come back and try another recipe out. That’s why we recommend bookmarking this page now so you don’t forget it.
