Luminox Atacama Watch Review – XL.1927

Hello, today we’re going to be taking a look at a fantastic military field watch from Luminox. This is a brand I’ve featured quite a bit over the years, they produce brilliant timepieces with high visibility dials that include excellent quality luminosity for up to 25 years of light.

My Initial Thoughts On This Watch

Luminox are a well respected brand when it comes to high quality military timepieces. The brand is known for working closely with military groups around the world, they’ve designed custom timepieces for special forces, including the likes of the US Coast Guard, Air Force and the Navy SEALs. That’s not a bad list of happy customers in my opinion.

Dial

This Luminox Atacama field watch features a very easy to read dial with dark, bold numerals that stand out against the cream coloured background. There’s a day and date display located at the 3 and 6 o’clock position, this is often a nice feature to have, in my opinion.

One of Luminox’s best features is their high quality lume technology. They make use of LLT (Luminox Light Technology) these are small glass tubes filled with gas which offer a constant glow for up to 25 years. They don’t need an external light source, nor the require of a push button. These little gas tubes can be found on the hands and each of the hour markers where they are installed by hand.

Movement

At the heart of this men’s Luminox watch is a Swiss made quartz style movement. Swiss made movements are often favoured over any others. They’re highly accurate and require very little maintenance. This quartz movement is powered by a battery.

Type of glass

Protecting the front of the timepiece is a sapphire crystal glass lens with an anti-reflective coating. Sapphire crystal glass provides a very high level of scratch resistance, with a Mohs hardness rating of 9.

Whilst sapphire crystal glass does provide much better scratch resistance than a cheaper mineral glass, it does come with the downside that it isn’t as shatter resistant, which is why many of Luminox watches feature mineral instead of sapphire.

The anti-reflective coating is something you find in many watches in this sort of price range, it minimises the glare you can sometimes see when looking at the face of a watch.

Casing & Size

The casing of this luminox watch is made of stainless steel with a diameter of 45mm making this quite a large timepiece. The thickness of the watch stands at 12mm which is a pretty standard size.

If you’re someone with smaller wrists you should take the large 45mm casing size into consideration, sometimes people with smaller wrists find these bigger watches a bit uncomfortable to wear.

The caseback and crown are both screw in, this provides you with better water resistance.

Watch strap and clasp

The strap of this Luminox timepiece is made of a soft genuine leather. It fastens with a standard buckle style clasp and has a width of 25mm. This 25mm is suitable for the larger casing size and goes well with the military field style design.

Water Resistance:

The water resistance rating is 200m also known as 20ATM. A 200m water resistance makes it suitable for professional marine activity, serious surface water sports and skin diving.

Conclusion

As always, thanks for taking the time to read through today’s Luminox XL/1927 review.

Luminox, in my opinion, are a great brand that always offer very good value for money, so it’s difficult to go far wrong with one. Their LLT luminox light technology is rather brilliant and certainly something I can see many people enjoying.

If you’re looking for a military field style watch with a Swiss movement and high quality design, then I would really recommend considering this timepiece. At the very least take a look at the rest of the range on offer from Luminox.
